Dock doors (loading docks) sit roughly 48–52 inches off the ground so a trailer can back in level with the warehouse floor, letting pallets roll straight on and off with a forklift or pallet jack. A dock leveler closes the height gap between the floor and the trailer.

They contrast with grade-level (drive-in) doors, which sit at ground height for vans and box trucks. Co-warehouses typically share dock doors across members, who reserve a door and time slot for inbound and outbound freight.
